MiCA's First Year: Winners, Losers, and What's Still Undefined

The EU's landmark crypto framework is live. Here's the early verdict.

MiCA came into full effect in December 2024, and the first year of enforcement has produced a more nuanced picture than either critics or supporters anticipated. The clear winners are larger, well-capitalised issuers and exchanges with existing compliance infrastructure. The losers, perhaps predictably, are smaller operators and DAOs that lack the resources to navigate a regulatory regime designed with institutional actors in mind.

The implications extend beyond the immediate data. What we’re seeing is a fundamental shift in how capital formation works in crypto markets, one that rewards participants who combine on-chain transparency with traditional macro frameworks. The convergence of these two analytical traditions is producing insights unavailable through either lens alone.

The practical question isn’t whether this dynamic exists, but how to position around it systematically. We’ll continue tracking these developments in future issues.
